There is a new show on TLC called Abby & Brittany, which follows 22 year old conjoined twins. It focuses on them graduating from college with two degrees, and hunting for a teaching job for a single salary. They have two hearts, two stomachs, and one reproductive system and bottom half. One girl controls the left side and the other controls the right side, which is hard to even imagine! Talk about having amazing communication skills!
They were brought up by a mother who didn’t let them use their situation to feel sorry for themselves, and instead taught them that they could do whatever anyone could do, as long as they had a positive attitude and a lot of determination. All of their (many!) friends are adorably protective of them, as anywhere they go, they get all sorts of comments and looks, but they don’t let it get them down. They were so cute, happy, and funny; by the end of the show I just wanted to be their friend! They finish each others sentences constantly, and their bond is incredible. I miss having a close bond with someone.
I’ve never been as inspired by a pair of individuals on television as I was with these girls. Abby and Brittany make me feel like it’s amazing to embrace who you really are and to wear it with pride, whether out in public or with friends and family. Lately, I’ve been feeling guilty for how my differences are limiting me in regards to making money, making friends, and generally having to re-learn how to live in the world. The spirit that these girls have, lightens me somehow.

Can you imagine living as successfully as they do when you only had control of one side of your body and never got to have any alone time?! I guess you’d never know any different (like me in regards to feeling healthy…), but it’s still wild to think about.

Abby and Brittany’s story is inspiring, amazing, and wonderful because they have never let their situation hold them back from anything they’ve wanted to do. I really appreciate that their mom made them live life as normal as possible and I’m sure that everyone that gets to know these young ladies has nothing but positive things to say. I’ve got my Hopper set to record the new show and since I’ll be at work at Dish when the first episode airs, I know when I come home I’ll be able to watch it when I get the chance. I’m excited to see what they’ll teach society as a whole. In a world where bullying is out of control and being different seems to be a bad thing, they shine a light on what it means to be different and normal at the same time. From what I’ve seen they love doing the same things as all of their other college friends.
